St. Paul's College, Awka was established by the Church Missionary Society (CMS) in 1904. The College was charged with the responsibility of producing personnel who would preach the gospel within the context of the culture, the tradition, and the ethics of Nigerians.
It continued to produce different categories of school and church teachers including clergymen until after the Nigerian Civil War in 1970, when the Government of East Central State took over the control and management of educational institutions in the State.
In 1991, the then Anambra State Government handed back the premises of the College to the Diocese of Awka.

At the instance of the Bishop of Awka, then Rt. Revd MSC Anikwenwa, all Bishops of the Anglican Dioceses East of the Niger and the Bishop of Asaba decided to re-establish and upgrade the College as St. Paul's University College, Awka. The College was focused to hold out to all persons without distinction of race, tribe, creed, gender, status, or political affiliation, an opportunity of acquiring higher education in the context of positive values.
